lsw 08 0137

Loudoun Symphonic Winds is a community-based concert band that has become one of the area's most exciting musical ensembles since its formation in 1994. LSW includes both professional and dedicated amateur musicians. Our goal is to give the Loudoun community and its neighbors an opportunity to play and hear the best of yesterday's and today's concert band music.

We cover a wide spectrum of music from classic marches and orchestral transcriptions to Broadway songs and holiday favorites. The band showcases new compositions from the best of today's band composers and brings you exciting guest soloists. LSW has entertained and delighted audiences throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Our ensembles also perform at major local events such as the July 4th celebrations at Franklin Park.

Additionally, we are a member of the Association of Concert Bands.

For more than 30 years, we have provided performance opportunities for Loudoun County residents as well as nearby communities

  • We support music education for institutions such as Loudoun County Public Schools.
    • Collaborative workshops with acclaimed artists such as the Canadian Brass.
    • Continuing Education Credits for LCPS music teachers.
  • County-wide events for Loudoun County, such as the fireworks celebration at Franklin Park in Purcellville, VA every Independence Day for the past 25 years.
  • Annual Toys for Tots events for the past 15 years; all collected toys are donated to the 25,000 needy children in Loudoun County.
  • Performances at retirement communities such as Ashby Ponds Senior Living.
Musical support for communities such as Christ the Redeemer Roman Catholic Church in Sterling, VA.

We are an all-inclusive organization, whose diverse membership includes retirees, government workers and executives, music teachers, students, recent college graduates, people from all walks of life. We support diversity in all forms.

Dr. Gilbert C. Corella

Music Director and Principal Conductor

Dr. Gilbert Corella has been with the Loudoun Symphonic Winds since 1999, conducting more than 200 performances.

He began his musical career as a tubist with the United States Air Force Band. As a member of the Ceremonial Brass, he participated in a broad spectrum of ceremonies, ranging from State arrivals at the White House to full honors funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. His duties expanded as he became a drum major, performed as a soloist and conducted other components of the Air Force Band.

During his career, he moved into an administrative role as the Director of the Air Force Band’s Chamber Series program. His role with The USAF Band continued to expand when he accepted duties as a public affairs specialist and later becoming the Director of Special Events. With these responsibilities, he managed radio and television productions and represented the Air Force at major music conferences throughout the U.S. A strong believer in effective communication, he fostered partnerships with civilian and other military organizations, promoting the Air Force’s mission to inspire national pride. He retired in 2010 after serving 25 years.

In his civilian capacity, Dr. Corella began an instrumental ensemble program at what was then Charles County Community College (today the College of Southern Maryland). He also served as the Tuba/Euphonium Professor at George Washington University (Washington, D.C.) from 1999-2019 and has been the Music Director for Loudoun Symphonic Winds since 1999.

An advocate for music education, Dr. Corella founded the Serapis Foundation in 2003. Its mission is to educate and stimulate awareness on the diversity of musical expression. The foundation serves as a vehicle to recruit professional musicians to inspire future generations, targeting the diverse and economically challenged.

He has recorded on several compact discs, including The Bear (Unnatural Ax); Side by Side, A Klezmer Service, National Taptoe, and Tower Music.

His education includes a Bachelor of Arts from the Catholic University of America; a Masters of Arts in conducting and performance from George Mason University; and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Catholic University of America as the first-ever graduate in tuba performance.
